How to check whether setting featured image works properly?

  Select a few photos and proceed to create a new gallery and choose an option to create a blog post for it.
  When the post is created, the “most selected” photo in your selection will be assigned as the featured image for the post.

      Yes, as long as the image is selected before you create a new gallery. Right now you can’t set of modify the featured image after the blog post has been created. This may be added in the future.
