MobileMe Gallery

This plug-in allows you to export photos from Adobe Lightroom directly to the MobileMe Gallery.

There is an issue with Mac (x64), which appears to be an internal bug in Lightroom 3.0.
This issue prevents users from logging into their MobileMe accounts and causes an “Unexpected Server Response” error message.

The issue is specific only to Lightroom 3 under Mac OS running in 64 bit mode, so if your hardware is Mac Pro or MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Quad-Core Xeon, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, or Quad-Core Intel Xeon CPU, then most likely you are affected.

Unfortunately I have no way of knowing when Adobe would fix the bug, but I am hoping soon.

July 23, 2010 – Update
Further research shows that user authentication failures happen only after a reconnect to the MobileMe service. If you restart Lightroom and then try exporting pictures to MobileMe, everything seems to work fine. However, if you click Log Out or close the Export dialog, the Unexpected Server Response message will pop up on the next login attempt. This can be used as a temporary workaround for Mac users until a fix for Lightroom 3.0 has been released.

Requirements

  • Lightroom 2.4 – 2.7, 3.0 : Windows XP, Vista or 7
  • Lightroom 2.4 – 2.7 : Mac OS X
  • 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)
Note: due to an internal issue in Lightroom, the plug-in does not support Lightroom 3.0 for Mac (x64).

    Hi,

Congrats ! Excellent plug-in ! I thought I would never find something like this.

I’ve tested to upload some pictures. Is there a size limitation ? I need the original images to be downloaded, without any compression.

    Thank you !

    • Vlad

To upload photos at their original size simply uncheck the Resize to Fit box. However, you still need to specify Resolution – leave it at 96 pixels per inch.

I believe MobileMe has a limit of 6 MB per photo. Currently, the plug-in doesn’t automatically check if a file exceeds the limit, but I will include this in the next update.

      • Julien Becker

Thanks for your answer ! The Resize to Fit box was unchecked. The dimensions of the photo in pixels remain the same, but the file size is much lower. Is the file compressed by your plug-in or by MobileMe ? When I upload a picture from the MobileMe App in my browser, the file isn’t compressed. Where does this difference com from ?

        • Vlad

The plug-in doesn’t compress images. If you chose specific dimensions then Lightroom would resize your photos while rendering JPEGs from your originals. If the Resize to Fit is unchecked then rendered JPEGs would remain at their original pixel dimensions. How can you tell if there is a difference in file size between a photo uploaded through the plug-in and the same photo uploaded through the MobleMe App? Could you provide specific details?

PS: You might want to reply to alloyphoto@alloyphoto.com so we don’t clutter comments with our dialogue. I’ll post a summary when we find what’s causing the difference.

        • Vlad

Fixed in version 1.1 – Now JPEGs are exported at 100% quality.

  • David Wiegold

This is just what I was looking for! It works great!

One question? Do you have plans to include the options of allowing downloads in the mobileme gallery (either single image or whole gallery)?

    • Vlad

Dave, please clarify what you mean. Once photos are exported and uploaded to the MobileMe Gallery they are in Apple’s hands – you can only access them through the gallery interface, and I don’t believe there’s an option to download. On the other hand, why would you want to download – you still have your originals in Lightroom.

      • Julien Becker

When you create an album from iPhoto, Aperture or the MobileMe App in your browser, you can specify if the visitor of your gallery can download the photos or the entire album. You can also choose if your album is visible on the gallery home page or even protect an album with a password.

I think that David means it would be very cool to have this options in your plug-in and indeed it would be :-)

  • Craig Davis

To enable the download function of your photos once on the mobile me gallery, until the update is available on this plugin, just go into your Me account > Photos and adjust settings. You can add the download function in there.

Thanks for the great plug-in. Looking forward to the updates you’ve mentioned.

    Hi Vlad,

seems to be a great plugin … if I finally get it running ;-)

The problem is the following: I installed the plugin corectly, which isn’t the licensed one yet (as I would asume) but when tempting to log into to my mobile.me account I receive the foolowing eror:

    Error code: 0
Unable to establish connection with the remote server.

What’s the problem, or better: how can I solve the obvious problem?

    Thanks for your help.
    Greetings from Germany
    Johannes

  • David Wiegold

Thanks for adding the download options for new galleries. Now I don’t have to open iphoto at all. Perfect!

    Keep up the good work!

  • Julien Becker

    Hi Vlad,

Thanks for your work ! The plugin gets better every week !
But I have one more feature request. Is it possible do add an option to choose the profile. Now the plugin exports by default in sRGB, in some cases I would prefer Adobe RGB.

    Cheers

    Julien

  • Tony G

    Hi Vald,

Thanks for this plug. It has solved my Aperture/Lightroom dilemma once and for all! (Only reason I used Aperture was to manage uploading to mobile me).

  • james

    Vlad,

do you know if this will work when they release version 3 of lightroom, or will I need to re-buy this plugin?

    thanks,

    James

    • Vlad

For the last month or so I have been working on the new version to integrate the plug-in with the new Publish Services API, which will be introduced in LR3, and my plug-in will support it. You will need to install an update, however you won’t need to re-purchase.

  • mark

    Great plug-in thanks so much.

  • Sam

I have a mac and recently purchased the plugin. What are the steps to get the 1.12 update to work?

    • Vlad

If you had an older version installed, just replace the files in the installation folder with the new ones.
Please e-mail me directly (alloyphoto@alloyphoto.com) if you need additional support or troubleshooting.

  • ian

Love the plug-in, no need for Aperture anymore. One question/comment though. My photo’s appear in reversed order online. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

    • Vlad

Thanks for liking my plug-in! :)
Here is what you do to impose the “correct” sort order:
In the Export dialog, scroll down to the MobileMe Gallery Options section and select the Sort photos in the order they are exported (override MobileMe sorting).

  • Randy Black'

I cannot upload to my MobileMe account. I get and error 631 attempt to index field ‘guild’ (a nil value)

I am using v1.9, and I have checked: the entire folder for the lrdevplugin is in the Adobe/lightroom/modules folder..

Does MobileMe Export 1.16 link to Lightroom 3 “Publish Services”

    • Vlad

Version 1.16 does not support Publish Services. I am waiting for Adobe to resolve the issue with Lightroom 3.0 for Mac. Once this has been squared away I am going to release a new version of the plug-in (1.17?) with added support for Publish Services and a couple of new exciting features.

  • Tim Lajoie

Thanks for the really great plugin. Works exactly as expected and will save me a bunch of time and hassle from having to deal with iPhoto. Nice job.

  • Nicolas

Hi, thanks for that great plug-in. will there be a feature to password protect a album?

    thanks

    • Vlad

Unfortunately, the MobileMe interface doesn’t provide this capability. If Apple eventually implements it, then I will add the feature to my plug-in as well.

  • Marco Loumiet

Will you upgrade the plug-in for a Lightroom 3 compatibility?

    • Vlad

The plug-in is already compatible with Lightroom 3, as outlined in the System Requirements section above. Yes, it doesn’t work yet in Lightroom 3 for Mac for most users, but this will remain so until Adobe fixes the bug causing authorization failures in LR 3.0 for Mac (again, explained above).
What exactly did you have in mind?

  • Bob

I have a new Mac Mini (2010) running OS X 10.6.4 and Lightroom 3 trial (64-bit) and the plug-in to MobileMe is working fine. I will purchase if this is correct. Why do you say it won’t work in this environment, or what am I missing?

There are some options on the export I can’t choose, like Gallery Options to sort photos, but other than that it’s working.

    Thanks!

FYI MobileMe supports password protected albums published from iPhoto or Aperture.

    • Vlad

      Bob,
What I have seen happening in the past, the plug-in would work once or twice with no issue, then it starts giving the “Unexpected server response” error. Overall, this bug causes a very intermittent behavior.
I would suggest trying to log in and upload pictures a few times more before you make your purchasing decision. Otherwise, I would recommend simply waiting for the next Lightroom update – supposedly, the bug will be fixed there.

PS: iPhoto and Aperture use a different method of uploading photos, this is probably why the MobileMe web interface doesn’t have this feature, and so doesn’t my plug-in.

  • Bob

I kept getting the message that I couldn’t upload more than 10 photos, so I purchased for $15. Not a big deal. I occasionally see the Unexpected server response error, but try to login again and it seems to work and I can upload.

Thanks for continued development on this and I hope Adobe fixes whatever they need to fix for us.

Your plugin might be just what I need to choose and buy Lightroom over buggy Aperture 3. I’m evaluating both and so far Lightroom in a couple hours has impressed me with it’s stability much more than Ap3.

  • Patrik

Any news on the Publishing mode?

I assume it will be quite useless in unregistered mode, but hopefully we get to try it atleast (10 pictures max published…).

With working publishing I will be registering.

  • mers

I cannot login using your application.
I was able to do this before but not now.

    OS10.6.4
    Firefox 3.6.8
Downloaded latest version of your app

    • Vlad

Please submit a debug log as explained in the Support and Troubleshooting section. You’ll find a link in the Related Links section on the plugin’s home page.
